A recent phone call with my mum reminded me that I haven’t blogged for a while, well over a month in fact.
I started to think about why there has been a gap in my writing.
It cannot be time related as I am not more nor less busy than I was before, neither can it be lack of things to write about because I get to see and do exciting things all the time.
I think that the reason I haven’t been blogging as much is because now I’m in the hospital, all the time, with real patients.
And those things that are exciting and interesting to me are very personal, sometimes scary and sometimes devastating to patients and their families.
It doesn’t always feel right to be blogging about them.
I know I can anonymize everything, but every time I try and write about something interesting that has happened in the hospital I cannot quite bring myself to publish it online.
I’m not sure that if I were a patient I’d feel happy knowing that my medical conditions were being blogged about by a doctor or medical student (or anyone for that matter) even if it was all anonymous.
That isn’t to say I will stop blogging, fear not dear readers (Mum, Dad and Nan!) it just requires more thought.
So, on to something that I do feel comfortable writing about:
My first departure from the UK in over 10 years!
Yep, 2 weeks from today I am off to Amsterdam to a conference for medical students where I have been selected to present research work on stem cells that my colleague and I did in the lab over the past few years (where this whole blog started!)
Whilst there I will get to attend some workshops in robotic surgery and a few free dinners (which is the real reason that I am so excited).
The downside to this conference is that I will be away on my son’s birthday, something I never thought I would do and don’t really want to do again. We have decided to move his birthday a few days earlier and given that he will only be 5 I doubt he will be bothered as long as he gets presents and cake!
But it is not something I can always do. First and foremost I am a mum and that’s the way I want it to stay, which reminds me that I have invitations to make and a “space” themed party to plan before the week is over!
Until next time..
